Being fired from a job has a certain finality to it… Never again will you have to step foot in that place or have boring conversations with your droning boss.
Still, despite your employer giving you complete decisiveness that they no longer want to pay you to hang around, there's no guarantee that they won't contact you out of the blue months or years later asking for your help with something that no one was able to handle after you left. It's almost as if your role actually was important and they shouldn't have fired you in the first place.
Of course, they're never going to admit any wrongdoing or negligence on their part. No, this thing just happens to have gone sideways coincidentally—now, would you please volunteer your help in resolving it? (Unpaid, of course.)
How you handle these situations is up to you; you might be worried about burning a bridge that may need to be crossed in the future, but you might still be friends with some of the people who work there and want to help them survive the toxic organization, or you may want to watch the entire place go down in flames.
This employer reached out six months after firing this worker, asking for their assistance in the form of a password for unlocking the computer they had been using before they were fired for challenging the company's unethical practices. See their story below, along with reactions from the community where these screenshots and their account of events were originally shared.
