A hamster is one of these pets that gets… really underappreciated. People get hamsters as pets because hamsters are adorable. We get that. Hamsters look like little marshmallows at different levels of toasting. Adorable. And then these hamsters live for a few years and… that's it. Parents get hamsters for these kids, thinking that it'll be easier to take care of them than cats or dogs, but they underappreciate just how attached people get to hamsters. And they definitely underestimate how "easy" it is to take care of them.
Forget all the details of feeding and cleaning. All of that is important, of course, but not nearly as important as knowing that, apparently, hamsters can be spiteful as heck. You may think that your hamster will only live 2-3 years, but some of them - just to spite everyone - live on into their wrinkly, grumpy, old-man hamster years.

Hamsters are truly a difficult pet to have, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They require just as much love and attention as a cat or a dog, and going into hamster ownership - like most people do - without realizing that is bound to end in disaster. It's true that hamsters don't live long lives, but we're pretty sure that some of them could live longer than they do in better conditions.
Although we're not sure that this one wanted to live longer lol, so thank you for clarifying that. That is one grumpy looking hamster. We're glad that you were taking care of it and making sure that it was living its best life as they grumpy old man that he was.
