Person next to me on a plane kept violating my personal space
  • 03
I was flying in the window seat, because I like looking out the window. The woman sitting next to me reached in front of me. multiple times to close the window shade. She never asked me, she just reached directly in front of me to close the shade. I would immediately reopen it, and a few minutes later she would reach in front of me again to close it.

It was a noon domestic short haul flight, so no reason to need darkness in the middle of the day. And absolutely no excuse for violating my personal space multiple times without asking me or acknowledging me or treating me like a human in any way. So I pulled out my book and turned on the reading light, despite there being ample natural light from the open window for me

to read. I then positioned my hands in such a way that my watch would reflect the reading light directly into her eyes. I read like that for an hour, jiggling my hand the entire time, so it would shine the light back and forth across her eyes and be super distracting and annoying. Once we landed and she took her headphones off, I turned to her and said.

“next time you fly, book a window seat if you want to control the window. Or at least treat me like a human and ask me before you violate my personal space. What you did is unbelievably re.” She looked SO OFFENDED. And naturally she walked 2 mph. Being a city walker, I easily got in front of her, then once we were on the moving walkway I stopped

immediately in front of her. Did the same on the escalator to the curb, before flipping her off the entire way to my ride. Edit: wanted to make a slight clarification that I was subtly flipping her off by extending my middle finger while holding

the handle of my bag, so it was upside down and you only would've noticed if you were looking at my hand. It wasn't like I was just holding up to her face. I was angry and it was a subtle way for me to voice my anger and get it out of my system

jonvox OP. 5 hr. ago The hard part was watching out the side of my eye to make sure I was targeting the light into her eye without looking directly at her

Reasonable_Tenacity 5 hr. ago I'm with you. As far as I'm concerned, whoever has the window seat controls the shade.

fivefootphotog. 5 hr. ago How did you not smack her or her hand? That is unreal!
  • 13
jonvox OP. 5 hr. ago I only got three hours of sleep, because I had to wake up early to pack and leave for the airport. Consequently I would. nod off into micro sleep for 30 seconds at a time, and that's when she would close the windowshade
  • 14
Which is also why I wanted the window open. I was really sleepy and needed the bright light to stay awake

fivefootphotog .5 hr. ago You exhibited a lot more self-control than I would have, awake, asleep or in between. Bravo!

jonvox OP. 5 hr. ago Honestly only because I didn't react fast enough to slap her f ng hand out from in front of my face

Tootsie813 4 hr. ago Should have licked her hand...

jonvox OP 4 hr. ago An "accidental" sneeze would've been a better option, preferably with a lot of phlegm

Cilantro368 4 hr. ago I sat next to a woman in the middle seat a few months ago (me in middle, her in window) and she had sparkly stuff on her sweater and kept the shade up the whole time. When she bent over to get something out of the seat pocket, our entire section of the plane looked like it was lit up by a disco ball! It was quite a trick to film that without her noticing. It was a fun flight.

    • jonvox OP 4 hr. ago I remember once the light was shining directly through the window onto my diamond earring, and it made the prettiest pattern of reflected light on the wall of the plane

jmerica 3 hr. ago My family and I were flying business class a few years back. A passenger was losing his mind on the worker at the desk at our gate. Yelling at the top of his lungs in front of everyone. Mind you, it was really nothing important. It was due to a 30 min delay because of a huge storm. Nothing anyone can do.
  • 22
He ends up sitting in business class with us. My dad's window was shining directly in his face. He put on this nicest voice to ask my dad to close his window but my dad refused. Then, the guy starts complaining to his wife about how he doesn't understand why my dad was being an a ole.
  • 23
Now, there were about ten seats in business class on this plane. Our group took 8 out of 10, with them having the remaining two. We essentially told this guy off for the next two hours and were pretty relentless looking back. Essentially
  • 24
bullied him the entire flight asking if it makes him happy yelling at strangers in public for situations out of their control. Asking why anyone would want to marry someone like that. Just a lot. I aaaalmost felt bad for him.

jonvox OP 3 hr. ago The worst I ever saw this is when I was flying on Christmas and our flight was delayed due to snow so we didn't land until 1 am on the 26th. And of course they misplaced all our bags.
  • 26
Cut to the guy at the front of the line yelling at the poor clerk (the only one working) "I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU EXPECT ME TO DO!" and holding up all the rest of us from filing our lost baggage claims.
  • 27
I was so f ng confused, because “I don't know what you expect me to do" is what the poor harassed worker who doesn't have the luggage is supposed to say to the angry person demanding their luggage materialize out of thin air.

KombuchaBot • 3 hr. ago Window seat gets window and an armrest, centre seat gets two armrests, aisle seat gets one armrest and some extra legroom, we're not animals, we live in a society.

    • jonvox OP 3 hr. ago She was in the aisle seat!!!

    • Bigstachedad · 4 hr. ago What you said to her was brilliant, but you should have said it the first time she closed the shade. The rest was just icing on the cake.

jonvox OP 4 hr. ago She was wearing headphones during the entire flight. I waited for her to take them off because I wanted to ensure she heard me and I really didn't wanna tap on her shoulder to get her attention
