'The real question is, are meetings important?': Internet applauds savvy employee who avoids all meetings by being good at his job

I don't think there's a single corporate employee on God's green earth who hasn't sat in a meeting and thought about the many more useful and/or entertaining things they could be doing right now. While it's true that bringing people together in this way is an occasionally essential part of the working process, the mantra of 'this could have been an email' is an all too common one. Streamlined communication is the way to go.

However, in most cases, a complaint like this isn't going to stop us from trying not to space out on Zoom for 45 minutes or more. This is part of the reason that one woman's co-worker earned the respect of the internet after she reported how he refused to join any of their meetings, which was allowed because of how competent he was in his role. There are downsides to being that essential, but this isn't one of them.

We no longer add him to the invite list most times and if we do and he doesn't show up we don't bother chasing.     Lady Amilia of Bebbanb... @lady_amilia Replying to @grofley Follow I already do this in some regards. I push the boundaries a little each time. I know accommodations have been made for me because I hold a certain level of knowledge. But it comes from your work speaking for itself.

    nonbinary? i-i'd have to... @finelylesberg Follow theres a guy at my job who doesn't have a job title and works from Hawai'i half the year. none of my coworkers have ever seen him in a meeting or real life. if he left it would probably cause the instant collapse of at least 2 departments

    Allegrata @Allegrata3 .4d The real question is are the meetings relevant? I have worked with people that hold meetings for the opening of an envelope, a complete waste of my time. Your team should evaluate if those meetings are truly necessary.

    Ose. @joeloseiga • 3d Prior to my current company. Unless you were my manager, If you send me a meeting invite, I would accept until you send me the agenda and objectives of the meeting. Otherwise, I won't show up. People hated me for it at first but everyone soon understood that's how I worked.
