Do you think really good Friends should try and date? Or does it always end up a disaster that everyone should have avoided in the first place?

I know that Ross and Rachel's story ended up with a happy ending, as well as Monica and Chandler's story, but it is still only a TV show, and I am curious as to what happens to good friends in real life when they try dating each other. I am sure a lot of cases end up with an actual successful relationship, much like Monica and Chandler, but other cases can end up like Ross and Rachel in season 3, and then what happens? Do these two people who were extremely close friends just stop talking to each other, or do they try and go back to that friendship, and leave the romantic feelings aside?
