The short is called Close to You, and it’s beautiful. Like, “I didn’t expect to get misty-eyed watching a baby chase a pacifier” kind of beautiful. There’s no dialogue, just gentle music and a little story about a baby who, when left alone for five seconds, discovers their toys have a mind of their own (Wait a minute… that sounds familiar). A rattle rolls to their feet. A block hops away. And then the baby’s pacifier turns into a mischievous little gremlin that climbs onto the mobile above the crib - triggering the baby’s first, wobbly steps.
It’s heartfelt. It’s gorgeously animated. It’s suspiciously well-made. And now the internet is spiraling: Who is this baby?? A baby Peach? A tiny Rosalina? Someone spotted a red Pikmin hiding in the background at 1:40, which just adds to the chaos.
Nintendo gave us no context. No credits. Just the Nintendo logo and four minutes of emotional whiplash. Is it a teaser for something? A backstory? A secret Galaxy sequel breadcrumb? No idea. But if this turns out to be part of the new Mario movie, I’ll be the one ugly crying in the theater before the opening title.
