boss made a rule... and soon change his mind

as I start to work in general manager position in my actual company, my boss gave me a company smartphone. I was carrying two phones with me all the times, as soon he noticed this he called me and said no personal phones were

allowed during work time "because personal life stays outside of the job and not to mix things" and I was there for "work and not to call to my girlfriends or logging into Facebook" and "personal phones are a distraction". I agreed and complied in the next day. in

the very next day after I started to keep my personal phone in the locker room, he was waiting for me at the lobby with very bad mood because he called multiple times after work time and I didn't answered and asked why I ignored him. I said I was at home

and my company phone was in the locker room so it was useless to call me after work time because the job should stay outside of personal life and I didn't want to mix things.

it's been 7 years as a general manager and I have only one phone now with both SIM cards because it's boring to fill both pockets with smartphones

Stabbmaster Never understood this. If you take a stance on something (in this case, personal and work time) you can't be upset when your words are taken to heart and what you ask to be done happens. Short sighted fools need to stop fooling around with a lackluster vision.

PoppaTater1 My boss is one of those that thinks we should be available for him to call any time of day or evening in case he has a question. I have two phones, my personal one and the work one.

The work one has the ringer turned off and "oh, sorry I missed the call" is usually my response. There is no reason to call me after hours. I also totally ignore the answering service when they call. Whoever it is can wait until the next day or the service can call someone else.

pardonthisnamestaken Funny how personal life. and professional life should never mix until they want to infringe on the personal life for their professional benefit. That's why I work for myself.

ithinkitmightbe Why do managers think it's ok to bother people after work hours? if they're not paying you an oncall fee they have no right to contact you about work.

so many people think if they show dedication to a business they'll reward them, all it does is allow businesses to take advantage of workers, and abuse their time, then these people get no reward because the business just expects it from them.

ruifaf OP the only time I call workers after work hours, in the weekends, it's for a barbecue or go out for beers haha

Red_Cathy Nicely played there! I guess if you had some out-of-hours call out agreement you could not play this move, but as it is if home stays at home then work stays at work. Nice.

ruifaf OP he doesn't call me after 10pm or before 6:30am but he calls me at lunchtime and in the he weekends or on vacations. he knows I'm with the company number all the time. that's the downside. but I have a great data plan in the company card xD

cero1399 One of my coworkers put his private and work sim in the work phone, he just turns the work number off after work.
