Karen at HOA Targeted Me Specifically with Fines Over Ridiculous Rules, So I Turned Their Own Rules Against Them-And Won Big! So, let me (32F) take you back to about two years ago. I had just moved into this nice little neighbourhood ― pretty, - quiet, and with a perfect suburban vibe. The kind of place where you could see yourself settling down with your family and finally getting some rest. Little did I know, I was stepping into the lair of the most power-hungry, micromanaging, HOA you could e

It all started when I received a letter about my lawn. I was surprised considering I always took great care of my lawn, and it was quite well- maintained. I kept it mowed, edged, and even planted some flowers along the walkway. However, according to the HOA, my grass was "too tall" by a quarter of an inch. Seriously, a quarter of an inch! I thought it was a joke, so I ignored it, but the fines started rolling in $50, $100, then $200 (each week). I couldn't believe it.

I decided to attend the next HOA meeting to try and defend myself. That's when I met Karen (38F) — - obviously not her real name, but quite fitting who seemed to have made it - her life's mission to enforce every obscure rule in the book, and let me tell you, there were a lot of them! Some were so absurd I don't even know how they got to be there and were much worse than anything you could ever imagine. I don't know how someone could think up something so silly! Anyway, when I tried to reason wi

during the meeting, she brushed me off like I was a small child who didn't understand the "importance" of HOA guidelines. She truly believed she was doing good for the community, and upholding the peace! The other board members were no better, nodding along like they were part of some cult. It was clear-they had it out for me.

From that point on, they fined me for everything they could think up! Apparently, the colour of my front door was "too bright" (a navy blue front door, mind you). My mailbox wasn't up to "too tall", and when I sawed the leg down a few inches it was "too short"! I even measured it against other homeowners' mailboxes and noticed everyone's were of varying lengths a least by a little. They even tried to fine me for parking my own car in my driveway because it "obstructed the view" of my house. I wa

    - This was a major problem, but I'm not one to roll over and take this! I did a lot of digging, and eventually, I stumbled upon something a little-known rule in the HOA bylaws that said any changes to community guidelines required a majority vote from homeowners, not just the board. I did some digging and realized Karen and her cronies had been making changes on their own for years, never once consulting the community. The fines they were hitting me with weren't even enforceable!

Armed with this knowledge, I decided to fight back. I went door to door, talking to my neighbours. Turns out, I wasn't the only one who had been bullied by the HOA. Karen and the board caught wind of what I was doing but didn't know the extent of it. Even still, they tried to put a stop to it, labelling me a door-to-door salesman. At this point I didn't care and completely ignored them, I had something big! This kind of freaked them out, and I like to think they knew something was coming and kne

Going from door to door and meeting and talking to all my neighbours, I learned some interesting things. Mainly, I believed people were scared to speak up, thinking they'd face more fines. I had to convince everyone to fight back, and it was a long gruelling task. I showed them the bylaws and how Karen and her crew had been acting illegally, but eventually, we were all furious and prepared to demand change.

We all got together and called a special meeting one that Karen couldn't — ignore because we had the signatures and she had a dying curiosity about what was coming. At the meeting, I laid everything out: the illegal fines, the unauthorized changes, and how they'd been abusing their power for years. The look on Karen's face was priceless and worth every hour of time spent on this revolt. She tried to argue, but the evidence was overwhelming, and we were relentless, just as she had been with us fo

In the end, we voted - nearly unanimously — to dissolve the current board and elect a new one, wiping all outstanding fines. Unfortunately what had already been paid was too late to reverse, and many people had been treated unfairly for a very long time, but we did the best we could! Here's the sweetest victory of them all! Karen presumably couldn't handle living in a neighbourhood where she wasn't in control anymore, and her house went up for sale a few months later. She moved out not long afte

I've kept in touch with my neighbours, and I'm told that the neighbourhood remains peaceful even to this day! I still smile every time I remember the story, and I hope other people learn from this when dealing with their HOA. If there are so many nonsensical rules being used against you, you can probably reverse them and use those rules against your abusers - and win big in the process!

funwred28 2 min. ago Great story...everyone should read their bylaws and rules and regs. Yes a board is there to help run the HOA, but they are not rulers over all. Boards cannot just fine people. There are hearings that need to be held and THEN decisions can be made. This is a great story on how when people stand together, bullies can be stopped and if not working for the HOA, need to be ousted.
