Hotel employee is reprimanded by GM for ‘excessive use of overtime’ until documented punch times reveal that his middle manager was clocking in 1.5 hours late for every shift

When you're an employee who never has a consistent schedule, it can be difficult to find the time to rest and engage in social events.

Life is even more difficult when your coworkers are unable to clock in on time, especially when that coworker is your direct boss. You risk workplace retaliation if you go against your superior, so it's best to keep your mouth zipped and paycheck fat. That is until a higher-up decides that you are making too much money in your part-time relief role.

The employee in this story is retelling a debacle that happened years ago when they worked in a hotel. They worked night audit shifts mostly, and OP would be relieved by a middle manager in the morning. This manager, though, would clock in one to two hours late for every shift, so OP would be racking up some sweet overtime in the process. The hotel rules state there should always be an employee on-site, 24/7. Simply adhering to the rules, OP made out like a bandit considering they were in a part-time role.

Things hit the fan when the general manager calls the employee (who is only 3-ish hours into sleep after a night shift) and demands they come back to the hotel to discuss his excessive use of overtime, or he risks an insubordination tack on his file. Despite being exhausted, the employee is asked to risk their safety to drive 30 minutes back to the hotel. The hotel punch times reveal that OP was only doing what he was told, and the middle manager was basically throwing more money into OP's pocket by being excessively late.
