Despite several gay storylines in its 27-year history, Australian soap Neighbours had never aired a same-sex liplock until Monday, when Chris Pappas (James Moran), who is openly gay, and Aidan Foster (Bob Morley) shared an onscreen kiss at a party. The Australian Herald Sun said that the "build-up to the brief and relatively low-key scene... stayed true to promises... to treat the kiss like any other on the show."
Small-screen characters in the U.S. achieved this milestone on Melrose Place in 1994, when Matt (Doug Savant) locked lips near the pool with guest-star boyfriend Rob (Ty Miller) -- though some would argue it doesn't count because a threatened advertiser boycott resulted in the camera cutting away from the kiss.
