As the first century of the 2000s marches onwards, it seems like a lot of the world is getting more boring in terms of aesthetics. Look at how they just changed the PayPal logo, for instance, making it as flat and similar to all the other big corporate tech logos we see elsewhere. It's all a big part of the great cultural flattening, where algorithms dictate what we consume and much of it kind of starts to look the same. This is what makes variation in memes all the more important, as they give us some much-needed color and difference (even when the same formats get recycled a thousand different times). Looking at memes isn't exactly beating the algorithm, but it does refresh our eyeballs a little when it comes to the widespread blandness. They are a tonic to so many other things, even when they decide they want to satirize them.
