Wendy Landes, 56, was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer called Liposarcoma in the fall of 2008. Since then, her three kids -- twins Ali and Matt, 25, and Jackie, 20 -- have started a nonprofit and raised nearly $1 million to help save their mom's life.

"My brother, sister, and I knew we needed to do something," Ali said. "We wanted to save our mom."

The Landes kids spend roughly 40 hours a week organizing an annual "Wendy Walk," even though Matt and Ali work full-time in Los Angeles and New York, and Jackie is a student at the University of Miami. Now in its third year, Wendy Walk is held on three different days in each of the kids' three cities, so that Wendy can participate in each of them. (This year's fundraisers kick off Sunday in L.A.)

Since her diagnosis, Wendy has undergone six chemotherapy treatments, two 13-hour surgeries and a round of radiation; so far, nothing has worked.

"We all think about the Wendy Walk 24/7 and call each other in the middle of the night or early in the morning whenever we think of a good idea for the walk," Ali said. "We will do anything to find a cure."
