'This is not what our guests are used to, but... it is the right thing to do': Restaurant owner informs diners that they shouldn't tip servers, faces online backlash from skeptical waiters

This restaurant owner has an idealistic way of running their eatery, but online, people are totally divided on the idea. 

It seems like the topic of tipping is everywhere these days. More and more establishments are incorporating tipping into their business models. From coffee shops to restaurants to food trucks, almost anywhere you get food these days is going to have an iPad screen asking if you'd like to tip 20, 25, or 30 percent on that meal you just bought. Though this can be lucrative for servers, customers can get quite fatigued of this constant extra tipping that adds up over time. One restaurant owner thinks they have the answer to this: eliminate tipping and build a better environment for their workers. 

The owner has laid out their rules, and its main purpose is to reassure customers about why their prices may be higher than expected. Although servers in the comments section disagreed with this person's methods, it couldn't hurt to try out a tip-free restaurant meant to benefit workers and see if it's a viable business idea. 

Up next, this young employee was promised a raise when they turned 16 years old, only for their boss to refuse and cause them to quit on the spot.

    A NOTE FROM THE OWNER: I understand this is not what our guests are used to, but I feel strongly it is the right thing to do. I won't continue to perpetuate a system that ⚫ forces our guests to directly pay some employees • overvalues the contribution of some workers and devalues the work of others ⚫ fosters division and resentment based on job title I can't change the systemic issues in the restaurant industry, but I can make sure they don't affect how our individual restaurant operates.     Commenters thought this seemed way too good to be true

    human_suitcase I checked out their menu. They sell sandwiches and milkshakes. Most of the items are under $10. I don't see how they can pay servers $20 or more per hour unless they're rotating diners fast.

    P... As someone who's working as a waiter in Germany, I'm kinda priviledged because I'm getting minimum wage and also tips from customers. There are definitely better paid jobs but among the bad paid ones, you get tips on top of what others are getting so as a student who needs to earn a little it's definitely not too bad.

    applejackhero Last two places I worked are similar, and it's becoming more common on my city. Just flat 20% in every check that's divided between whole staff based on job an hours worked. Still a top line if people wanna toss a few more dollars our way. I make about 30-35 an hour in total, which on my high CoL area is just about a

    SoFisticate So, I have a couple places with signs like this around, and they absolutely do not pay properly. I found out the one nearest me pays their servers 14/hr. They have hiring signs and ads and wonder why they can't keep workers. I've never seen the place busier, like they are adding on another section. Greedy bastards

    Some experienced servers noted that they'd make much more money at an establishment that allowed tips

    Slightly-Blasted I average 50-60$ an hour with tips, I would NEVER wait tables for a flat hourly rate, I'd work in an office instead for half the work and similar pay.
