That's probably because they need a sense of control, to control the inevitable existential fear of being a person. At some point in toddlerhood, they grasp that joining the dark side or buffing up their muscles can be quite empowering for them.

Since kittens are toddlers in a way, try playing with them the same way. You can take a wand and get them to make stuff disappear, for instance, or have them conjure their meal out of thin air. They won't notice the backstage shenanigans you'll pull to do that, and if it doesn't intrigue them immensely, at least you can film a nice video to upload and receive endless love.
