Employees refuse to cover manager's shift after she breaks her arm, leading manager to take away future shifts from employees who refuse her demands: ‘I assume you don't need money’

Some people make it a rule that when they are off work, they never answer any work-related call, text, or even email. Not only because they are not getting paid to do any of that, but also to set clear boundaries that everyone in their workplace must respect and follow.

Doing so can also prevent some unpleasant conversations with bosses or managers because when they try to contact you while you are not at work, that is never a good sign for you. But, if you don't answer – they can't really blame you for anything. They can call you all they want, but they can't physically force you to answer the phone.

The manager in this story is trying to force her employees to be at her beck and call at all times, simply because she has a broken arm. She decided employees must pick up a shift or come in early, no matter when she asked them to, while she spent time 'healing'. So when she called one of her employees on their day off and asked them to come in to work but they politely refused, she decided to take action and ensure she would never be refused again, all with a simple message on a whiteboard at work. Regardless of whether or not this action is legal, I would not have recommended anyone to keep working for a person like this. She clearly doesn't view her employees as actual people with real commitments outside of work. Just the “can't" in her message on the whiteboard proves how little she cares about her employees.
That being said, I really hope the employees would find a way to get back at her for pulling something like this, legal or not. I hope they all find a different job and quit on the same day, and then we will see who will care about missing any shifts.
