Forensic work fascinates us, there's no arguing about that. Every investigative series draws us in, letting us feel part of the action. But let's face it, no matter how much the screenwriters try, we will only understand partially how the detectives reach their conclusions through inspection of the footsteps. Most of the criminals will probably throw away their shoes after crime-ing, won't they? It's Criminal 101.

However, animal footsteps are much easier to recognize. True, every now and then, depending on your whereabouts, you'll see a surprising shape, but most of the paws and claws pretty much give themselves away. Especially with your pets. It's not uncommon to find a punkish paw print in the pie or muddy mark on the mat. The problem is that having an immediate suspect won't give us much more than a shamed look and a loving lick. But every now and then we get to act as detectives, tracking the steps to the source. In the rare cases of unrecognizable footprints, the best thing is to upload them online and receive crazier and crazier assumptions, aliens included.
