There is a huge difference between being a fan of something and being part of an actual fandom, and those who are a part of the fandom know exactly what I mean. 

Being a Harry Potter fan is something that even people who haven't even read the books claim they are, and that is valid. You can be a fan of something as long as you enjoy it, and it shouldn't matter to which extent. You don't have to know everything about it, you can simply like it, and you qualify as a fan.

However, if you want to qualify as a fandom member, or a true Potterhead in Harry Potter's case, then you have to earn your place. It's more than just reading the book and watching the movies. There is a level of understanding and consumption you must take part in to truly become a part of the fandom. The more you know about it, the better–facts, behind-the-scenes moments, information about the author, the actors, and even inside jokes – these are all crucial for the common Potterhead.
