The fascination cats have with boxes got us a bit philosophical. We can see it with toddlers as well. The need for a place to be alone, arrange your thoughts, or hide is deeply relatable; after we grow up, we crave privacy and independence and move out of our parents' place.

Kids - and cats, apparently - need that, too. Boxes give them a cozy territory they're safe, in control, and free to decide whether to use it or not. In a world where their control is limited - they're not in charge of feeding times, cleaning schedules, or house members - the box is their turf. Imagine the feeling you had in your first apartment. You didn't care that it smelled awful, the neighbors were gangsters, or that the bathroom was basically in the sink - you loved the feeling of being in charge of your own life.

Since cats can't decorate (thanks to their lack of opposable thumbs), you should absolutely do it for them! The possibilities are endless. Luckily, in this day and age of online order options, boxes are abundant. Save some of them and create a fortress for your cat to rule over. There are plenty of inspawration posts out there. Cats' love for boxes is relatable. Boxes are very cozy when you come to think of it. They’re soft, but not too much. They're cozy, but somehow structured. Once the wetness issue is solved, they’ll make a great construction material.
