A big red flag here is not respecting someone's boundaries, especially when the mother refuses to respect the woman's attempt to set boundaries. It's messed up! Mother-daughter time is something special, but not when that quality time is forced, unwelcome, and stepping over clear lines that have been set before. There's not much to say about why the mother is doing what she's doing, but attempting to take over every aspect fo her 36-year-old daughter's life is a bit much, don't you think? 36-year-old woman demands overbearing mother return her house keys after she continually lets herself into the home without warning: ‘I told her to leave multiple times’
Privacy is important. As humans, we need time alone to reset and recharge. We don't need a reason to want privacy for others to allow us the privilege of being alone. Overbearing parents teach us what we don't want in our lives once we move out, and that would be a lack of privacy.
Even though most parents mean well and can't help their helicopter ways, there's no excuse for making the same "mistake" over and over again after their children beg for some personal space. Unless parents are given a rational reason to hover over their children like a bee to a flower, they need to understand basic respect, ASAP.
What if we're not talking about children, though? What if we're talking about a 36-year-old woman? The woman who posted this story is fed up with her mother, who lets herself into the woman's apartment whenever she pleases and "nitpicks" everything about her life and living space. This is the reason many children-turned-adults yearn for personal space—they were never given it to begin with. Of course, the mother turns it around on the woman despite having no real grounds to be upset…
