Guy refuses to ‘pass it along’ at the snack cart when a generous stranger buys his $2 popcorn, shutting down a peer-pressure-driven trend at the source: ‘There was a large family behind me’

This guy was grateful for a stranger's kindness but refused to accept the responsibility of the folks behind him in line. 

True generosity is tough to find these days. Influencers film themselves giving cash to down-and-out folks on the street and expect a comment section full of praises. Billionaires donate millions to charity, but it's just a tax write off. And celebrities bandwagon off of pay-it-forward TikTok trends just to remain relevant in the trending scene. Is anybody just nice for the sake of being nice anymore? Rightfully so, the man waiting in line for a bag of popcorn in this next story was fairly sceptical of a stranger's generous gesture, because like many friendly gimmicks, no kind gesture comes without strings attached.

  • I used to work at a coffee shop in college and the one thing that made me crazy at the register was dealing with customer payment. Immune to the charms of the tip jar, yet extremely concerned with their public image, a fair amount of fake-nice people would come in and try to order coffee for the whole shop. As if they'd won a scratcher and decided to shout, "Next round's on me!" in a crowded bar. 

    Lo and behold, reality is nothing like a Hallmark movie, so we can't just expect strangers to give us a gold star in exchange for a $2 menu item.

    I was standing in a long line at a food cart, waiting to get a popcorn refill and the gentleman ahead of me gave his order, then said, "And whatever he wants!" directing his generous smile my way.

  • reriiga NTA - Pay it forward/Pass it On, whatever you want to call it is a nice gesture when doing it in the moment, but this should never be seen as an obligation. People who do it and then expect the next person to do it too are not doing it because they are being charitable, it's because they want the attention of starting it.

Meets the spirit of things without taking advantage of you. Beyond that. You can't give what you don't have and shouldn't feel guilty for that
