I used to work at a coffee shop in college and the one thing that made me crazy at the register was dealing with customer payment. Immune to the charms of the tip jar, yet extremely concerned with their public image, a fair amount of fake-nice people would come in and try to order coffee for the whole shop. As if they'd won a scratcher and decided to shout, "Next round's on me!" in a crowded bar.
Lo and behold, reality is nothing like a Hallmark movie, so we can't just expect strangers to give us a gold star in exchange for a $2 menu item.
