"Showed up at the right time."

It was literally one of the worst days of my life. For one thing, I had dropped a bed on 1-85 in the rain in heavy traffic. I recovered it but not a fun experience. I had also, just a couple weeks prior, moved out after a 30 year marriage, and was missing my dogs.

I looked up after closing my car, and here comes a cat up my driveway. It was almost like she had just checked the address to make sure she had the right place.

She walked up to me and asked if I had any food she could eat (I did not speak cat but she made herself clear). I happened to have a can of dog food - she would never touch it now - but she was hungry and ate it. I spent a little time getting to know her.

I wasn't sure if she was really a stray or just wandering the neighborhood, she was not in bad shape, so I did not try to bring her inside. I decided, if she is still around when I get home from work tomorrow, I will buy some cat food for her. If she is still around the next day, I will get a litter box and bring her inside (it was winter and getting cold).

You guessed it, 13 years later she is still here. I never could get her to be a completely inside cat, she objected strenuously when I tried to ignore her requests to go out. I had a screened porch and that was usually enough to make her happy though.

Her first gift to me showed how she had been surviving. I discovered it on my door mat one day - half a rat! She did this another time, kind of grisly but she thought she was being nice, I guess.

She has had her share of issues and currently has kidney disease. But she still crawls into bed and snuggles until the warmth is extreme...doing my best for my little girl.

FeralSweater Dropping a bed on the highway after leaving a marriage definitely gets the attention of the CDS.

DreadPirateAlia Cleo says: "You feed me (the cat food), I feed you (the dead rat). We are in the same colony, we are kin, we take care of each other. Also, I love you." What a sweet baby she is.

TCrabtree93 That's just how the CDS works. Sometimes you know that you need the cat and why in the moment, sometimes you figure it out later, and sometimes you never know either.

truly_beyond_belief Cleo knew you were a cat person who just didn't have a cat yet. So she took care of that.

QBee_TNToms_M... Thank you for sharing your story. She's a beautiful girl. It's funny how the CDS works. Somehow they know when we need them even when we don't see it.

bystrouska She's so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your story, I got a bit teary eyed reading it... Cats really are the best, aren't they? They just know when we need them. I am glad you found each other. Wishing you two all the best in her golden years
