29-year-old refuses to cover 27-year-old girlfriend's half of the rent after she impulsively quits her job with no plan: 'She put herself in this situation'

There is a downside to quitting on the spot. Whenever you leave a job, whether or not it's on good or poor terms, it's common for anyone to ask the question: what's next?

Of course, you do not need to always have everything figured out. Sometimes, you have to quit by necessity, and you do not have the opportunity to get all your ducks in a row before you "peace out," so to speak. That being said, there are some folks out there who have the tendency to act impulsively, the consequences of which do not solely affect their livelihoods but also those of their partners and family members.

  • Many folks fantasize about quitting their jobs, and while we encourage people who are truly unhappy and poorly treated in the workplace to seek opportunities elsewhere, it's always best to have a strategy if you can help it. In this case, this lady very much could have put some thought into her decision-making beforehand. It turns out the only plan she had in mind was for her 29-year-old boyfriend to fully support them and pay her half of the rent indefinitely without consulting him first. Of course, he wasn't ok with this, not solely because of the unnecessary pressure it added to his plate but also because he simply did not make enough money for such a sudden transition.

    Nope, you should not be covering her share of the bills. But unless your lease stipulates that each party is separately responsible for their own share of the rent -

    You're kinda hosed. Most of the time, both parties are responsible and if one party defaults, the other party is equally liable.

    Your best bet is to tell her she has ~X amount of time~ to get a job, and then she will be paying you back ~x amount per paycheck~ until her debt is clear.
