Jealous stepmother throws out all of 18-year-old's mother's things, teen rescues them from the trash sparking confrontation: 'She tried to get the police involved and accused me of stealing'

Memories are precious and absolutely not replaceable, as are the things that remind us of those memories, and especially when those memories are of someone who has passed, who we'd like to remember as vividly as possible. But still no matter what that memory is, or who it is of, and how important they are or were in your life, memories fade over time, like a photograph left out in the sun. It's just the tragic truth of all of it. 

Having photos and keepsakes is no replacement for the person or the memory itself, but photos and items can be powerful tools for anchoring and recalling memories you didn't even know you had. I often wonder whether some of these memories are even real and if they were just there waiting in your subconscious or if your brain has pieced together something that sort of makes sense to complete the image in your mind.

  • Of course, these aren't essential to have in order to properly honor someone's memory, but if you do have them, you bet that you'll be keeping them close and keeping them safe.

    That's why this teen was stunned when her stepmother insisted on discarding all of her mother's things, her mother had passed some years before, and the jealous stepmother had never gotten over the fact that there had been another woman in their lives before her. She very ungraciously treated the memory of her mother and their things, forcing the teen's father to throw everything away. When the teen rescued the belongings from the trash, it started a feud that sent the teen running to this online community for their advice.

    YouSayWotNow It's one thing for her to decide she didn't like having so many memories of your mother on show in the house (though it's very insecure to insist on NONE) but it's quite something else to insist they must actually be thrown away in trash rather than put into storage where she can't see, or stored in a relative's home.

    Those items obviously meant something to your dad for him to have kept them, and to try and argue her actions before acquiescing. So it's utterly outrageous that he's backing her insistence on insisting she get them back so she can put them all in trash.     Limp_Technology... NTA You should tell your Dad if this doesn't change he'll lose not only his first wife but her children too and most likely family. He should have never let this happen and should have given her the option to stop making a big deal out of critical items for his children or leave the house.
