A cat's worst nemesis is water. It's a tale as old as time, cats fighting away every droplet of evil, but cats truly are not comfortable in the wet, damp confines of unbecoming bodies of water. And when it comes to foul weather, feral cats, and a kind passerby, purrhaps the cats have found a new hero that can save them from their worst fear.
Growing up, I had an indoor/outdoor cat—Pookie. This scrappy, scraggly cat was the lord of the block and she was tough as nails, commanding the respect of every creature that passed our front yard. However, when there was a speck of dew on the grass or if she accidentally scuttled into the sprinkled leaves of her favorite bush, she'd leap into the air like a high-flying cartoon, screeching and mewing in dismay at her dismal fortunes. Alas, no cat is immune to the distrust of water. For whatever reason, cats want nothing to do with it—which is why the heroism in this next story not only saves the lives of a few kittens in the Pacific Islands, but it also saves their drenched floof dignity.
