Retail employee walks out mid-shift after team gets scolded for taking contractual breaks: 'We didn't deserve a 15 minute break after unloading 1500 boxes?'

It's important in life to know when you can do better. Of course, desperate times call for desperate measures, but there is a fine line between taking work because you need it and allowing people to manipulate you into accepting the unacceptable.

I'll never forget my first internship. I was a naive student and had accepted an unpaid opportunity with the promise that I would assist a creative director directly. Unfortunately, no one made it clear to me that assisting meant far more than menial administrative duties. It meant doing janitorial work. This is, of course, not meant to disparage those who do that for a living, but I had not been informed that this would be a large part of my unpaid so-called "stepping stone." I quit at the end of the first week after things did not get better. By the following week, I had a better opportunity, and guess what? It actually paid.

  • Here, we have a retail worker on an overnight shift who was tasked along with his team members to unload thousands upon thousands of boxes. Somehow, however, the manager did not feel that they were entitled to their contractually obligated 15-minute breaks. In fact, they were scolded for a good half of their “break time” for taking time to rest after unloading 1500 boxes and sorting their contents by hand. This employee knew that although he needed some extra cash, this treatment was unacceptable. Here's hoping he found a better opportunity!
