There's always a dark side to generously helping out your fellow coworkers. On the one hand, people can start taking your help for granted and soon enough, you'll be doing your work on top of theirs. On the other hand, if you're unlucky enough to have a toxic manager, they just might start blaming you for wanting to help. 

This kind of friction between an overly competent employee and their manager often stems from a place of insecurity on the part of the latter. When you're too good at your job to the point that you're helping others out, the most insecure managers won't interpret that behavior as decency but rather as a threat. Any reasoning they give for subsequent punishment is more like grasping at straws than coming from any sort of legitimate place.
