Okay so, I'm a letter carrier. I have a business I deliver mail to that has a cat living outside and over the course of like 6 months this cat and I have started to bond to the point where he follows me back to the mail truck and it low key breaks my heart this business does feed the cat, and he's got a small little shelter to sleep in.

I'm planning on taking this cat with me in July when I move. Currently I cannot have pets where I'm staying.

Anyways would it be weird if I asked the business owner if I can bring him to a vet to get checked out and then bring him back there until I can take him? I actually went ahead and jumped the g in a little and purchased some pet insurance but I believe that has a waiting period for it to start. I just feel like its not my place to ask such a thing.

Almost 2 weeks ago I posted to r/Cats asking if it was weird to ask if I could take someone else's cat to see a vet because I didn't know if I'd be overstepping since I'm just a mail person, and this is not my cat. I'm a letter carrier I deliver mail to a business that has a cat living outside that seemed like he needed help.

Anyways I'm happy to say he's fairly healthy! The vet says he's about 5 years old, 8.8 lbs. someone in the comments of that last post mentioned Stomatitis, yes the vet did confirm he does have gingiviostomatisis so she recommended soft food which I did let the business owners know.

They gave me a dose of topical de wormer and flea/tick treatment. His ears do not possess mites but they do have a lot of wax. She said he's probably in pain when he tries to groom himself so she shaved all the matts off ② on top of it she said it was her good deed for the day so I wasn't charged for any of this

Fairymask • 1d ago I think it's amazing that you helped this kitty. Why are the owners seemingly neglectful?

ImaniLovee OP • 1d ago Not sure, but she seems like she means well. I brought him back before they closed and she was pretty shocked by his new appearance. She then thanked me and offered to help cover any vet costs from here on out.

shadow-foxe • 1d ago if the kitty does have stomatitis then it will need loads more vet care as the only real way to help fix it is, a whole mouth tooth extraction. The cat IS in pain if its not grooming, it can also stop the cat from eating and then cause food aversion. (my cat has this condition). Monthly shots of steriods can help some cats with that condition.

ImaniLovee OP • 1d ago Yeah the vet did mention steroid shots. She did say it could be a little costly though not that I'm not willing to pay for this cat to not be in pain, I just gotta get my money up first. I do have pet insurance on him so hopefully that will help with the cost a little. Plus this lady said she is now willing to help cover the vet cost. If you could, are you able to give me a ballpark estimate on how much your cats treatment is? Just so I have an idea

Top_Team5386 • 1d ago You are amazing! Seems like he needs a new home. And a bath. Every time he tries to groom himself, he is ingesting the dirt and soot. Can you take him in?
