Sister asks for $8k of her sister's inheritance to repair her car after blowing through her own entire $75k inheritance: 'She said I am selfish because we both received the same inheritance and I clearly have the money'

Financial responsibility is something you either learn or learn the hard way—or don't learn at all and doom yourself to repeating the same mistakes forever. If you're lucky enough, your parents will attempt to guide you in these matters, whether or not that lesson sinks in. Or you may be gifted with a great deal of self-discipline that keeps you from making serious financial misjudgments. Should you fail to learn it, you'll quickly blow through any sum of money you might receive, watching it erode away faster than you ever thought possible. From there, it's hard to stop the habit of impulsive spending that you've learnt, and you're digging yourself into a deeper and deeper hole. That negative balance or mounting sum on your credit card will catch up with you eventually.

Of course, those of us who are lucky enough have family who can support us when we run into a spot of financial trouble, though not everyone has this advantage. Still, it would be best not to take this lightly, and preferably, the causes would be circumstantial and not of our own making. Running around and demanding money from family isn't something that you should be doing like this sister is here.

    She contacted me in tears last week when her car broke down and she owes $8k to get it fixed. She can't get a loan since she has horrible credit and I said I couldn't assist her since I have my money wrapped up in investments and withdrawing it early will cost me penalties.

    This is somewhat untrue. I can tap about $15k without charge except I do not want to do so. She has constantly misused money and I am fed up with it. Our parents rescued her numerous times and now she expects the same from me. She said I am selfish because we both received the same inheritance and I clearly have the money.

    Our mother phoned me the other day telling me to assist needy family and our grandma would be ashamed if me. But our grandma was very thrifty and would more than likely be appalled at my sister's expenditure. Am I wrong to have lied about being unable to access my money? I have worked hard to manage my money and i feel like my sister thinks money just appears out of the ground!

    moisanbar NTA. She will never learn if you keep bailing her out. In the future, lie to your family about what money you have. Faking being broke is not too hard when it's people who are terrible with moeny you have to fool. Parasites will s k you dry and they don't change.

So you don't have any money to give but you are overdue on a bill and want to know if she can help you out as she is family. She will quickly tell your sister lol.
