Boss pressures employee to postpone PTO due to upcoming project deadline, employee refuses, citing HR policy: 'Managers are responsible for planning around employee availability'

Just because your manager can't figure out how to complete certain tasks and responsibilities without you does not mean you should feel sorry for them! After all, a sign of proper management is if the team can continue to thrive effectively without one person's presence. People take vacations, they get sick, and they move on to other opportunities. A decent manager leaves room for those possibilities. If everyone else is left scrambling due to one employee's absence, then the person to blame is not the employee who couldn't come into the office. It's the manager's fault!

In this instance, we have an employee who was told by HR that they needed to use the remainder of their PTO before a certain date. Otherwise, the employee would potentially lose those days entirely. With that in mind, the employee decided to finally ignore the pressure to work through holidays, so he took off without giving it another thought. Of course, their boss started panicking, as the deadline for a big project was coming close, but as we said earlier, that complete lack of preparation and anticipation was the boss's issue and not the employee's!

  • The best part of this anecdote is that when HR got involved, they sided with the employee! That's when you know this boss was losing their cool, as they didn't even have human resources by their side to pressure the employee to reschedule their PTO. That's what you get for trying to mess with the rules, boss!

    Chuck_Miller_PZ. 6h ago This is an example of poor management. A manager needs to do more than ensure that work is done on time. They also have to look after their people. Ensuring they take their PTO is an example of that. I doubt that that's the lesson they took from that though
