Yesterday I saw my neighbor drop their car keys on their bare foot, and they exclaimed (loudly) their anguish. Instinctively, I heard their cries of pain and came to a complete standstill, freezing before ultimately averting my gaze. I didn't want to make them feel awkward or uncomfortable about their painfully humiliating experience, but I also didn't want to make myself an accessory or their go-to aid in any way, either. In a minor scenario like this, I'd wager that most introverts would sprint the other way, avoiding any sort of emotional outburst just to ensure they're free of unnecessary socializing.
Perhaps it's inhumane to leave someone hanging like that, but wouldn't it be worse to engage in the world's most uncomfortable small talk to save them?Didn't think so.
