27 Baffling Design Choices Found in the Wild (June 15, 2025)

Design is all around us. It's literally everywhere we look. Everything man-made was designed by somebody somewhere at some point in time. It sounds facile to say this, but it's easy to forget. You take the shape of a pencil for granted. A pencil has been a pencil for as long as you've been alive and they usually look the same no matter where you go. But not so long ago, somebody had to sit down and decide what a pencil was going to look like. They had to account for how it would contain the lead without it getting on your fingers, how it would fit in your hand while you were using it, and what color it was going to be. It's not a perfect design by any means and it cannot not be improved on. But it's what we have.

All to say it's easy to take for granted the people who make these decisions for us. We accept them as facts and easily forget how many decisions go into what our daily lives look like and feel like.
