  • Dog is avoiding me after his surgery Question
  • My dog is usually stuck by my side. My family would get annoyed because when I would leave the house he would ignore them and just stare out the window until I got home.

  • He had surgery last week and did great but now he doesn't come when I call him and he only hangs out with the rest of my family and ignores me. I was the one doing all his medications and I had to take all his toys away (doctors orders).

  • Do dogs hold grudges like this? We all find it funny but now I'm starting to miss him lol!

  • degeman It could be the anaesthetic as well. My dogs weren't themselves after surgery because they didn't feel great and a bit woozy from meds etc. but once those wore off they were their happy selves again. Your pooch is probably just a bit confused simple-times221 OP It's been a few days so the anesthesia should have worn off. But that could be it!

  • degeman Healing takes a lot of energy. They still feel pain, and it's not always obvious like in humans, so just a little more space is needed than usual. Hope he feels better soon! he's clearly very well looked after.

  • Emotionaldogmom I literally just went through this. They'll shake off in a couple days. I was so sad because usually my boy is by my side 24 seven and all I wanted to do was snuggle him after his surgery, but he literally wanted nothing to do with me, I promise you I literally will just fade in a couple days. It's a horrible feeling I totally understand.

  • BoomZhakalaka My dog held a grudge like this. Different circumstances. I had to board him with my mom for 6 months while I was working & recovering my financial situation. I came back home to get him and did NOT get a warm welcome. He ignored me for days, but some wilderness hikes and treats broke through pretty quick. Note: also he was a Boston terrier.

  • Dogzrthebest5 When my Pug, Pheobe, got spayed, she spent about a day absolutely TERRIFIED of me. It was heartbreaking. I'm guessing it was just a weird dg reaction, but man that was a looonnng day for me.

  • frillyfun Boston absolutely hold a grudge. They get over it, but those little gas bags are about as stubborn as they are stinky. You did what you had to do, and he'll get over it and love you again. Source: Boston terrier owner for about 15 years

  • CptAverage Dudes probably just sensitive. Same thing happened to our pup when he would get overtired. Make sure his basic needs are met, allow him the opportunity to be comfortable and it will probably smooth its self over in a couple of days.

  • mzinagro If you were the one giving meds and being "mean mom" taking his toys away, that's a confusing relationship change for him on top of a big stressful life event. He will forgive you, just be patient. Don't fuss or force anything or he'll pick up on your stress. Make sure you're the one who's also providing the good stuff, like taking him outside, giving meals and treats, etc. He'll come around, he's just a sensitive boy :)

  • spamalagee My dog had her eye removed in 2023. A bit of time and he'll be fine again. My dog was so quiet and distant for a while afterwards but she soon got back to her usual, batty self! Good luck!
