Entitled mom demands library patron move from the computer he's using so that her 16-year-old daughter can use it: 'You’re an adult. You can work anywhere. She’s a child.'

Many people no longer know how to behave in public spaces. You might assume that they never learned how to do so in the first place, but my theory is that the public's social skills have degenerated over time. Some say that the events of the past five years have made people forget how to treat others, but I don't think that's the case. The problem is that there are fewer social consequences to misbehaving than ever before. While there are social consequences for acting like a Karen online, there are very few for acting like a Karen in real life. People will scroll through TikTok in a movie theater after spending $15 for a ticket and think nothing of it. There must be people who are willing to shush loud individuals and socially punish bad behavior; otherwise, we will have to tolerate grown adults throwing tantrums in public and be content with it.

    Entitled mom and daughter want my workspace.

    So this happened a few days ag at my local library. I usually go there to get some work done because it's quieter than home and the Wi-Fi's decent. I had just sat down at one of the public computers, literally 10 minutes in when this woman walks up with her daughter. Daughter looks 16

  • The librarian in this story refuses to tolerate an entitled patron's bad behavior. A dude who was just trying to get his work done was getting harassed by a Karen and her teenage daughter. They desperately wanted him to give up his computer, but he didn't budge, and neither did the librarian.

    simmelianben Even if that's the case, the world doesn't always give us what we want. Having kids experience low stakes denials of their wants is important. And even more important if the kid has needs that make handling change extra hard.

    EarthWarning Its probably a girl who has never ridden a bike or excersized, suffers from anxiety, depre s on, ADHD and the Mom is just waiting for the 18th birthday to start collecting social security because her daughter gets an anxiety attack near a time clock, plus we don't need to pay for her college now so we can buy a Mercedes. That will round out the entitlement. I realize this is oddly specific as if I am referring to someone I know.

    MissyLovesArcades We had a regular patron at one of the branches I used to work at that had a computer she liked to use, came in one day to find someone else using it and didn't even ask her if she would move to another one, just flat out told her to get off of HER computer. Our manager had to have a discussion with her about that incident and other things. She was one of those regulars that tries to get real chummy with staff and then expects to be treated differently than the other patrons. No

In the summer, it's directly in the path of a corss breeze created by opening windows there and there.
