Man walking his dog stops so his dog can pee, the woman walking behind him passes him, then starts acting like the man was following her: '[She's acting] like a victim in an over-acted slasher movie'

Going on a walk with your dog is one of our duties as dog owners, sure, but to us, it's also one of the most fun things ever. There's something about the interactions - us with other dog owners, our dogs seeing their doggo friends - that we really like, at least when we have the energy for it. We like running with our dogs, we like it when our dogs lead us to that one bush they found a hotdog in once during every single walk that we go on because there might be a chance another hot dog will appear there one day. 

But a lot of us, here at Animal Comedy, are ladies, and we can honestly say that we didn't think about what this particular experience might be like from the perspective of a man. Until we read today's story. That changed our perspective a little, and yeah, we can truly understand both sides here.

    Walking with my 7lb tiny dog today. I stop on the side so he can pee. A lady who was behind me passes us and walks ahead. After dog finishes peeing, I keep walking in the same direction as I was.

    But now, the lady who passed me keeps quite obviously looking over her shoulder and making out as if I'm following her. Not once or twice, not even discretely, but nearly like a victim in an overaacted slasher movie.

    I do not take offense that a woman would feel nervous about someone following her (even though this is middle of the afternoon at a busy shopping center).

    What is mildly infuriating here is the notion that SHE was following ME, then rushed around me when I stopped for my dog and had the audacity to pretend now I am coming after her when I start walking in the same direction I was going all along!

    So far, there have been several "typical" responses either a. They relate or b. They either do not fully read the post and make general comments about women being nervous. It is hard to respond to these because I already stated in the post it was not one of those typical situations.

  • This one… is a tough situation. Because we can understand both perspectives. As women, we have been in positions where it felt like someone was following us. Sometimes, its paranoia, and sometimes, it's not. Better err on the side of caution, right? But we can totally see how it would feel unfair to the man on the other side - who is legitimately innocent and not deserving of our fear.

    Natti07 Ok tbh, if anyone is walking behind me, I do tend to look back just to see if they're gaining on me or if I should be concerned. I dont automatically assume that someone is going to harm me, but I do want to be aware of where they are in relation to me, even if im the one who passed them.

    Just the other day, I was walking my dog and trying to avoid a couple walking their two dogs and somehow each time i turned a different way, they still ended up near me and behind me. I was getting legit irritated. Anyway, point being, just bc someone is looking back doesnt mean she thought you were following her or doing anything. wrong. Just my perspective

    Educational-Ant8787 If she was behind you before how do you know she wasn't doing it already? I keep my head on a swivel everywhere. Some ppl feel less safe overall in public especially women. Sounds like she never accused you of anything but you're assuming she's only worried about you. Nothing to be infuriated by if you're not trying to do something shady.
