14-year-old protests after 17-year-old sister refuses to give her a ride to school when she wears cowboy boots: 'It is extremely disrespectful towards me'

Getting your first car can be a blessing and a curse in terms of the opportunities that it offers. While it affords you a level of freedom to travel wherever you want, whenever you want, it also opens you up to a whole new world of responsibility when it comes to giving rides to family and friends.

Of course, whether that happens is totally up to the vehicle owner. No matter how they feel about it, though, it is highly likely that they deal with people begging to hitch a ride when it is convenient for them.

While many drivers are happy to oblige with this, they usually also have some basic ground rules about being in their car. For the person receiving the favor, the least that can be done is to follow these, within reason. This is an incredibly useful privilege that they shouldn't want to mess up.

    AITA for not letting my sister ride in my car?

    I (17F) bought an old car off of a family member about a year ago. My sister (14F) seems to think that this means she should get automatic rights to ride in my car when she starts high school. I would not have a problem with this, except for the fact that she wears her cowboy boots everywhere. These boots she wears out to feed her horses and goats and doesn't clean them off afterward.

    I woke up at 6 am to catch the bus for my first 2 years of high school, and with her attitude, I think her should do the same. Am I just being a neat freak or do I actually have a standing here? TLDR; Sister refuses to wear anything but diety cowboy boots, I do not want them in my car.

    AlmostChristmasNow NTA. But this is an issue you should talk about with your parents. When you talk to your parents about it, I suggest you don't frame it as forbidding your sister's boots specifically but instead explain that you want your car to stay clean as a rule for everyone. Then it won't seem like you're targeting her specifically.

    Nta. Working-on-it12 Your parents allow the manure boots in the house? I lived on a farm at one point and there were rules about barn boots in the house. Your sister's fellow students wouldn't give her grief about those boots in school? I second the suggestion about vinyl floor mats. I have them for regular city dirt and snow and I love them. But consider if getting them would be seen as caving in to sis's boots in the car.

Sounds to me like she has 0 sense of personal hygiene and feels no discomfort at all even while walking around in boots that are covered in animal excrement.. Bottom line is, you paid for the car, it's yours, and you get to decide what you do with it. If she continues to act spoiled and selfish then she can simply just take the bus.

    NTA. Graflex01867 I also work on a farm/orchard, and always have muddy/ dirty shoes. The first thing my car got was weathertek floor liners that get hosed out ...um...occasionally. It's not wrong to want to keep your car clean. (And I just have mud. Your sister has manure. That's worse!)

    Practical-Reading958 NTA. This is a strange hill for her to di on. As a gardener, I'm as far from being afraid of germs as a person can be. I'm trying to figure out why she wants to wear mucky boots all day in school. I'd think that would stunt her socially. But regardless, it's your car and you are free to opt out of having horse manure in the carpet. If she has a problem with that she is free to find a less restrictive ride.

Granted the old car had leather seats and this new one has cloth seats so i completely understand wanting to be careful to make sure your car is clean
