I accepted a job offer from a competitor. Current company’s CEO reached out to my new job to complain about me.

So this is a bit different. I'm still a young professional and don't have a ton of work experience, but I've never encountered anything like this before.

I decided not to put a 2 week notice at my current job because it's not standard practice in my industry. Generally, if you
  • 04
put a 2 week notice it's accepted immediately. But again, this is standard practice in my field. I did not think it would be the
  • 05
end of the world to resign effective immediately, but I guess the CEO of my current company had a problem with it so he
  • 06
CALLED, a member of leadership at my new job to tell them that I didn't put in a notice.
  • 07
My new job called to get more information and I said it's true, I didn't put in a 2 week notice but this was also per senior teammate's

advise. I asked if there would be a problem with my start date and they said no but wanted to know what happened. They also
  • 09
asked if I was okay, so it seems like they sense how unhinged my previous workplace is.

I was an overall good employee and I don't think he would have anything else to say about me, but has anyone dealt with something like this before?
  • 11
I'm nervous about my current job offer reconsidering or possibly pulling the job offer. I'm thinking about seeking legal advise but I don't know where to start.
  • 12
I also never signed a noncompete or anything like that.

kinganti If I was on the receiving end of a call like this from some unhinged CEO, I wouldn't take it very seriously. I'd probably think to myself, "No wonder they didnt give notice!"

dataslinger And this is why you don't tell the job you're leaving where you're going.

Magnet50 Don't worry about it. I've worked in industries (defense and IT) where putting in your two weeks gets you walked out the door end of day, if not sooner.

I had a boss who lied repeatedly to investigators for a security clearance. I was able to provide names of others who backed up my version of things.
  • 18
Oddsphere I've never dealt with this, the reason being, I just quit without giving any details, not to my co-workers, supervisors or managers, it's
  • 19
none of their business and it avoids situations like this one. You also mentioned that you took the advice of a senior team member to quit without giving notice?

Sounds like that person played you for their amusement, I hope you didn't disclose to this clown who your new employer was, as they may have tried to sabotage you and derail your career

Screenwriter_sd Your former CEO shouldn't have done that. But I do have to ask how they knew what company you're moving on to?? If you told your former CEO, then lesson learned: do not EVER share where you're going next. Because it can lead to stuff like this.
