‘She gushed over Sofia and begged me to let her take my cat’: Teenager demands taking rescued Siamese Calico cat Sofia, escalating from begging to trespassing in an attempt to get her

  • The real (and extremely adorable) Sofia

  • I have an Entitled Person story that happened a couple of years back. I had put this in a Youtube comment when a story reminded me of this.
  • I'll be able to structure it better here. Some background: I have this gorgeous cat named Sofia. She is a Siamese colored calico with brilliant blue eyes.
  • Her eyes are crossed like a Siamese cat's would be. (We literally just call her a Siamese Calico). She's fairly small though fully grown so she looks very young.

  • My dad had gotten her from a neighbor who was sending her to the humane society because he was moving. We don't like sending unwanted animals there knowing the place is struggling.

  • We usually take the animals in and find homes for them. Sofia, however, was different. The moment she was placed in our home was when we realized she would have to stay with us.

  • Not because she was too beautiful to let go, but she was highly anti-social. Not in a violent way though. She was very skittish and would flinch and bolt any time someone went near her.
  • "But my parents told me I could have your cat!"

"Several times this chick came by and tried to persuade me to hand Sofia over to her"
  • Almost as if she expected us to hit her. I had a hard time getting her to eat as well. Before I could ask for her history as I really didn't like seeing her flinch like that, the neighbor up and vanished.

  • I feel like whoever owned her before did not take very good care of her and most likely antagonized the h l out of her. Whatever. I took it upon myself to help her open up.
  • I usually raised kittens to be some of the most loving little things you would ever meet and I hadn't taken on the task of trying the same methods on an older cat yet.

  • She had to be about two. It took me over six months for this girl to open up (mainly to me as I was the one doing everything I could for her) and by the time a year had passed,
  • she had become more accustomed to not hiding and running from the family. She still doesn't like seeing the vet though or like being picked up. Onto the incident:
  • My brother was friends with this particular girl (Entitled Teen or ET) who had come over to the house on occasion. She looked about sixteen or seventeen.

  • I was about eight years older and usually kept to myself so I didn't know much about her. Well, one day, Sofia had become comfortable enough to 'chicken' on one of the chairs out in our living room.
  • She usually stayed in my room or the back of the house as she was still skittish around strangers. ET took one look at her and fell in love, a common reaction with those who catch a glimpse of Sofia.

  • The cat also took one look at her then noped out of the room before EP could get to her, also a common reaction. That's when the begging started. She gushed over Sofia and begged me to let her take my cat.
  • The only reaction I could muster at the time was laughing hysterically. I honestly thought she was joking and I brushed it off. Not once, not twice, but several times this chick came by and tried to persuade me to hand Sofia over to her.
  • She even tried paying me for her when I told her the work I put into the cat to get her to the state she was currently in and tried to convince me to change Sofia's name to something she wanted.

  • Each time, she got the same answer. NO. I found this very comical. It was almost cartoonish. I have never run into anyone who just demanded someone to give them their pet.
  • Though, I should be thankful Sofia HATES going outside. I would imagine this girl would have tried to take her if she saw her outside if she could ever catch Sofia that is.
  • Each time my cat saw her, she disappeared within seconds. The comedy stopped when I realized that this girl would wait until I was away from my bedroom so she could go in and mess with Sofia.

  • I caught her leaving my room quickly one day with the excuse 'l thought this was your brother's room!' Instead of calling her out on it, I asked her to stay out and started to lock my door any time I left with Sofia inside.
  • At one point, I caught her jiggling my door handle when I was coming out of the bathroom. She probably thought I wasn't home and she just tensed up and ran off.
  • I told my brother to tell her to knock it off, stop chasing my cat and to keep away from my room. Then came the final straw. She started to use guilt tactics.

  • Below is what was roughly said as I don't remember it word for word. I was busy doing something when she approached me. ET: (with a fake sad sigh) Sofia doesn't look happy here...
  • Me: I assure you she's pretty content. ET: Maybe she'd be happier with me! My parents already said yes! Me: She's fine where she's at.
  • If you want a cat, the humane society has plenty of them that need homes. ET: No, they said I can have your cat since you said you were giving her away!

  • Me: I did not say I was giving her away. She is my cat and she's staying here. Besides, I'm still working with her.
  • At this point, I was getting annoyed. This chick was adamant and what patience I had left with this girl was wearing thin. What she said next shocked me so bad that it threw me into a blind rage.
  • It was something along the lines of this: ET: (In a demanding tone) Maybe she shouldn't be with someone who doesn't care about her happiness.

  • And I don't see any improvement so that tells me you are the issue. Give her to me now and I won't tell anyone you abused her.
  • I don't know what was going through that empty blond head of hers but that was the WRONG thing to say to me. How would that even help her case?!
  • Did she think that threat would actually work?! | have never abused my animals under any circumstance and even suggesting that I do is unforgivable!

  • I remembered I went off on her. I don't remember exactly what I said but later my brother told me it was almost like I was apart of some death metal band and a lot of it was just screaming instead of words.
  • From his point of view, it was freaky. My family knows me as a laid back, calm, peaceful person who rarely goes off on anyone so when I start screaming, something was up.
  • ET is hysterically crying at this point and running out of the room. My brother took her home without a word to anyone. I knew he knew what the girl was doing so most likely in his mind, she deserved it.

  • While I stopped screaming after she left, it took me HOURS to calm down and for the first time ever, Sofia actually crawled into my lap and laid down when I finally sat down.
  • I wanted to cry. This was a huge step for her and it told me she understood to some extent. I was so proud! I just wish the memory wasn't tied to such a stressful situation for me.
  • So my brother returns hours later and tells me what had happened. Of course, as any parent would be, the parents were livid seeing their daughter return home in tears and demanded to know what happened.

  • My brother told them everything, which caused ET to scurry off out of his view, possibly to avoid questions. Thankfully, once it was out that ET had been badgering me about my cat, they were pretty understanding about it.
  • Seemed ET was badgering them for Sofia but they told her no as the mother was allergic. I was so relieved hearing this as I had been trying to mentally prepare myself for a 'round 2' with her parents.
  • My brother said they were disappointed in her behavior and wanted him to relay an apology. God, imagine if I DID give her Sofia! ET was banned from the house and even if she wasn't, she stayed pretty far away.

  • My brother had severed ties with her but we still catch glimpses of her around town every now and then. Hopefully, she learned her lesson but I doubt it.
  • I know some hard- headed teens who do the same thing twice and don't realize that all it takes is the wrong thing to say or the wrong person to mess with.
  • Currently, Sofia is a total cuddle bug and my hobby buddy. She'll curl up in my lap while I'm playing video games or writing or sit there on the table pretending to be one of my skeins while knitting.

  • Where she was completely silent for years, she's now very vocal, can identify the milk jug and chases whoever has it, and asks for treats. She's almost completely out of her shell.
  • I say almost as she's still skittish with new people but if that's the exchange then so be it. I'm not much of a people person either. She's cuddling behind my laptop as I write this.
  • I would not give her away for the world. Edit: Meant to put pics in! Here she is! Finally got a good pic of her eyes!
