There is always a mysterious moment in every family's past. It's how that past is revealed that can make matters all the more complicated. The funny thing about family secrets that last for generations is that when they finally do get revealed to everyone, it's almost always dramatic, over-the-top, and unexpected.

For instance, I have a friend from college who, upon telling her mother that she had broken up with her long-term boyfriend, learned that her mother had an entire other marriage before her time. Apparently, my friend's mother loved her daughter's ex and was taking the news so poorly that she decided to reveal this totally separate and shocking chapter of her life that she had managed to keep secret for over two decades. She always planned to tell her daughter eventually, but one has to expect that this was not exactly the plan. I guess it just goes to show how people tend to spill the beans at the most inopportune moment. We all have a knack for being dramatic, I suppose!

  • The funny thing about family secrets is that despite the fact that every family probably has one or two, we're all slightly interested in learning about everyone else's drama. It's that special phenomenon where we all gain some sick sense of satisfaction from hearing about drama that doesn't affect any of us personally. From my perspective, I couldn't help but feel a lot better about my own family after reading about these secrets.
