'Sharon finally cracked': Coworkers unite against a thermostat tyrant in the office by wearing arctic snow gear at their desks because the AC is too cold

  • My coworker kept turning the office into a freezer, so I started dressing like I was going on an Arctic expedition We work in a small office. Like, one-room-with-four-desks small.
  • But for some reason, it has a huge AC unit. It's too big for our small office. When it's on full blast, it turns the place into a walk-in fridge in ten minutes.
  • One coworker I'll call her Sharon loved it cold. She'd walk in and drop the thermostat to the lowest setting. Every day. I asked her to ease up. She smiled and said,
  • "You can just bring a sweater." So I did. The next day, I came in with gloves, a scarf, a beanie, and a thick winter jacket. I bundled up like I was working in the Arctic.

  • Didn't say a word. Just sipped tea during the meeting and shivered a little. The next day? Same outfit. Plus earmuffs.
  • By day three, others joined in. Someone wore a parka. Someone else brought a space heater. It turned into a bit. Sharon finally cracked. She stood by the thermostat, sighed, and said,
  • "Alright, alright. I'll stop. You win." We keep the temp normal now. I still have the jacket under my desk. Just in case.
  • ladysig220. I had a new CEO-type come by my desk one day and observe that I was wearing a jacket and had a space heater running underneath my desk. In July.
  • He asked if I was ok and I said yes. He asked if they needed to change anything about the office and I said no. He finally said "I just want to make sure you're comfortable!" To which my response was "No,
  • actually, you absolutely do not want that. If I am comfortable, you have just basically melted the rest of your office staff. I keep my house at 78 degrees during the summer. Please do not accommodate me!!"
  • I'm the weird one who happens to be part lizard, and I'll happily wear my arctic gear to combat the air conditioning in the South in the summer.
  • Now, if EVERYONE ELSE was running space heaters and wearing jackets, I would expect something to change.... The outlier should not be the one catered to in situations like that.
  • Going NutCracken One person in our office turns the a/c down like she's the only one in the place. It's pretty infuriating.
  • Artistic-Deal5885 I just bring a little, and I mean little, desk fan just for moi. I have asthma and the blowing air helps me breathe better. I don't demand that others freeze for my own benefit. It's called living in a society and being concerned for others too.
  • Sounds like the thermostat needs a cover with a lock that only the maintenance people can access. Your co-worker can use a little neck fan or have a small fan at her desk.
  • corgi_crazy I've worked in a place that was a little bit cold in winter. We worked with tiny plants, and already wearing a sweater in winter, it wasn't any problem working there.
  • I had this coworker who loved to show too much skin, also in winter, and she asked continously for the AC to be off. The problem was that all the rest of people, like 80 people, were wearing season appropriate clothes.
  • I talked to her, because it was too warm, and she claimed to be "allergic for clothes" and that at home the heating was always very high That's it.
  • AreYouA_Tam I have the opposite issue. Someone turns the thermostat to 74. Once it was at 78. I'm very sweaty on those days.
