'Wait… you’re just letting me quit?': Dramatic coworker quits in the hopes that his boss will beg for him to stay, but his boss happily accepts his resignation

It sounds like this coworker was never particularly good at their job. You know you're not a valued employee if your manager is almost non-reactive when you walk into their office dramatically to quit.

This author's coworker clearly had worked themselves up to this climactic scene. He was unhappy with his work environment and wanted to stick it to the man, so to speak. This is the kind of individual who had planned this moment in his head for months and who likely rehearsed his quitting speech endlessly in the mirror. So you can imagine his surprise when the interaction he had been preparing for didn't exactly go as planned. In fact, it only proved just how expendable this guy was in the first place.

Let's be honest: that encounter exemplifies every miserable, hard-working employee's worst fear. We would all like to think that our respective teams would be lost without us, but ultimately, this is why one should not put so much emotional weight on how we are viewed at work. Obviously, we want to value our own work and we want that work to feel valued by our employers, but the minute you put too much emphasis on that relationship, the more likely you will be disappointed in the end.

For me, the most amusing part of this anecdote is how quiet the office was following the whole interaction. You just know everyone else was messaging one another on Slack to discuss the complete failure of their coworker's attempt at drama. You can't help but feel bad for the guy while simultaneously hoping he has learned a valuable lesson: don't expect everyone to care about you!
