23-year-old boyfriend jealous of girlfriend’s pet cat after she says she’d save her cat from a fire and not him, she questions her words: ‘[You] could save yourself’

Jealousy is one of the worst feelings in the world. It's as if an icy glacier just dropped down into your stomach, freezing your body, brain, and instincts. A cold hand suffocates you until you're left speechless. It's the feeling we always fear when we put our hearts on the line, and it can be as encompassing and consuming as love itself. It's driven people to do crazy things, it's driven people to near madness, and as demonized as it is, it's also completely natural and ubiquitous. 

The phrase, "I'm not a jealous person," was always so peculiar to me. If you feel a moment of anger does one feel the need to justify themselves as not being an "angry person"? We have made jealousy out to be an absolute, and a stigma, when in reality, everyone feels jealousy at some point in their lives, just like every other emotion. 

There are levels of jealousy though. Jealousy over infidelity is obvious. Jealousy over a pet is a little less rational and realistic. In the story below, the protagonist is dealing with a jealous boyfriend over her cat.

  • Jealousy over a pet is a huge red flag in my book. That level of jealousy and possessiveness at all is a red flag, but over an animal? It just shows a complete lack of grounding and being present in reality. No one can compare the relationship between people and animals.
