6’3”, 250-pound man stands still in Penn Station when a woman heads straight for him, skips the wide open space around, orders him to move, and rolls her luggage across his foot: ‘[I’m] too big to miss’

Some people move through the world as if it were designed to part like the Red Sea in their presence. They could be standing in a stadium, an airport, or, in this case, Penn Station, and still believe that every stationary object is morally obligated to shuffle out of their way. Spatial awareness is for the little people, the ones who do not have a personal gravitational pull dictating traffic patterns.  

Public spaces operate on a flexible physics, most of us make micro-adjustments to avoid collisions, but a special few treat the straightest line between two points as scripture, no matter how many bodies, bags, or laws of geometry are in the way. These are the collision fundamentalists, the single-lane zealots. They see your stillness not as you minding your business, but as a personal challenge.

  • So there stands a man, 6’3” and 250 pounds, stock still in the middle of an unusually empty Penn Station, with acres of clear space on either side. Here comes a woman, hand in hand with a child, forty yards away and locked on target. She closes the distance like a heat-seeking missile with luggage, lands right in front of him, and demands passage. An entire train hall of alternate routes sits unused. When invited to consider them, she snorts, sidesteps half a shoe’s width, and drags a wheelie bag directly over his foot.
