It's inconsiderate when a roommate finishes your food without permission. It's far more serious when they eat something as special and meaningful as your birthday cake against your wishes. No, we're not just talking about a slice. We're talking about the whole thing.

When you first move in with someone, both parties tend to establish guidelines and expectations, even if it's just verbally. Each roommate is particular and sensitive to certain phenomena. Some care about ensuring that the sink is not full of dirty dishes by the end of the night. Others care more about an equitable distribution of space in shared rooms. However, regardless of how thorough you are, there are always some circumstances you cannot foresee when it comes to potential roommate drama. Sure, you can try to anticipate disagreements all you want, but there will always be some sources of conflict that are so peculiar and unpredictable that there is nothing you can do to prepare for them.

In this instance, this author had a roommate who consistently ate bits and pieces of their food when the author wasn't looking. They had discussed this numerous times. However, the author could never have guessed that the roommate would go so far as to eat their entire birthday cake in one sitting before the author even got a slice of her own. That kind of behavior is so outrageous that not even the previous occurrences could have been considered proven signs that he would be that selfish.

Thankfully, the author was not going to let it slide. She decided that she couldn't get even by eating some of his food. After all, it doesn't seem like this guy is the type of roommate who even has food of his own. So she went back to the drawing board and brainstormed better ways to hit him where it would really hurt.
