  • My flatmate (30M) invited his entire family to stay the weekend (fri-mon) next month. 2 adults and 2 teenagers, in a 2- bedroom apartment.
  • He came to me to ask if it was okay (he'd already invited them and assumed that I would go and stay with my parents that weekend).

  • I start a new job next month so would need to be be at the flat both the Friday and the Monday, so I said no because it would mean traveling late Friday and traveling back on Monday early enough to come home and get ready for work and leave whilst they're still there.

  • Also I don't want to risk any problems or being late whilst i'm training at my new job.

  • After I said this I heard his mom on the phone talking about how i'm r de and disrespectful for not letting them stay.

  • I didn't know my housemate was on speakerphone with her when he was talking to me, his phone was in his pocket.

  • I tried to explain to both my housemate and his mom that it just wouldn't be feasible, even without the fact that I would literally be in the 2nd week of a new job.

  • Not that imo it's insane to try and fit 6 people into a 2-bedroom apartment, but they called me selfish and that I "didn't have to be r de about it."

  • Am I overreacting for thinking this is really disrespectful? Not only inviting them without asking me and expecting me to stay somewhere else, but creating a situation where I look like the bad guy to his mom?
