18-year-old consumes 40 pieces of sashimi at restaurant buffet celebrating his acceptance into law school, gets reprimanded by mom for eating too much: 'The amount I ate made it look like she didn’t feed me enough'

It may not be the classiest approach, but there are a lot of people out there who treat a buffet meal as some kind of endurance test. It is understandable: when you are presented with a mouthwatering array of different foods, given no limit on how much you can eat, and you have an empty stomach, it is a natural instinct to chow down until you have to be rolled out the door. It seems fair to make the most of the opportunity.

At the same time, not everybody is forgiving of somebody having a big appetite, especially in an environment like an upmarket restaurant. Greed is one of the seven sins, after all. There is a balance to be struck between enjoying oneself and avoiding the judgment of others. Whether it is justified or not, some people just won't hold back when it comes to judging another person's plate.

  • A teenager found himself struggling with this concept after his mom got upset with him following a celebratory family visit to a restaurant buffet as a reward for his recent acceptance into law school. Although he didn't usually eat a lot at lunchtime, he was impressed by the spread at the buffet and ended up indulging significantly.

    Following the meal, he was scolded for the way he ate and told that he had embarrassed his family. He wanted to know if he had been in the wrong.

    I(18m) recently got into law school and am now an LLB(Bachelor of Laws) student. My parents decided to take me to a special lunch at a buffet as a reward. My aunts, uncle and cousins were also there. My uncle gave me a labor law textbook as a gift.

    Now I usually don't eat a lot for lunch. I actually used to skip the meal or have just a banana to save money to buy books. But this was a buffet and they had some really nice dishes. I sampled many things and ended up wolfing down forty pieces of sashimi(I know because I went to the counter five times and got eight pieces each time).

    My dad didn't say anything but my mom later told me I embarrassed her by eating like a starving kid. That the amount I ate made it look like she didn't feed me enough. She was very upset about it.

    Oglio Vagilio Your a male teenager at a buffet. If she feels so bad about you being a starving student, the fix is to feed you more. Not shame you for eating your fill when it's all you can eat. Don't feel bad about her projecting on to you. And if there's good reason she can't feed you, she should be happy you were able to get a full meal for once.
