'He walked to us and allowed us to give him all the pets': Dumped kitten in a state park walks up for pets, gets rescued by two biologists, and earns the adorable name Mr. Frizzle

Yesterday evening my fiance, two dogs and I decided to take a walk at a local state recreation area (small lake + walking trails). When we arrived, it was nearing dark and the only other evidence of life in the gravel parking lot were about 10 parked yellow school buses and several people wearing fluorescent safety vests. We assumed it was perhaps a school bus driver training? Not quite sure.

As we were heading back to the car after the walk, we noticed a black cat in the parking lot sitting perfectly still watching us from across the lake. When we neared the car, he was standing next to it.

Very skinny and a little suspicious of us, eventually we sat down and waited, then he walked to us and allowed us to give him all the pets and pick him up. This recreation area is in the middle of nowhere and there was a rumor a few months back that kittens were dumped there but we never saw any.

Neither of us has been chosen by cats as adults and it will be an adjustment with my herding dogs but so far so good! On the drive home to drop off the dogs then to the store to get supplies for him, he was a happy lap cat making biscuits and purring the loudest little kitten motor I have ever heard.

I would guess he is maybe 5-6 months old? Weighs maybe 2- 4lbs (definitely lighter than a 5lb bag of flour which is my only reference point).

We were able to make an appointment at a clinic in a little less than 2 weeks for his vaccines, deworming, microchip, disease testing, and neuter procedure. He is eating well and using a litter box. His favorite toys are a watermelon mouse and strawberry mouse we picked up late last night along with all other supplies.

Any advice in the interim before his appointment? From following this sub I am aware Dawn soap baths are recommended - I don't see evidence of fleas (actual fleas or flea poop) but have felt a few ticks I am going to try to get off.

He is very skinny so we will try to get his weight up and little body nourished properly. His hair along part of his spine is nearly down to the skin - whereas other parts it is medium long and looks okay. He has been doing a lot of eating and sleeping. His eyes look good and ears look good.

If he had been a she, it would have been Ms. Frizzle (Magic School Bus) - we are both biologists. Hence, Mr. Frizzle!

TheUltimateMystery If the CDS (or adoption) in the future grants you a pet cat for your pet cat, you should consider naming it Liz. It sounds as though Mr. Frizzle is in good hands. And a preemptive congratulations to his dad for completing grad school!
