33-year-old wife refuses to cosign on a $55K truck that her husband wants because he still owes her $8K that he took from her inheritance: 'My mother-in-law texted that I'm emasculating him'

A significant portion of the male population believes that having a big truck makes them more of a man. If you've lived in the southern United States, you know this to be true. My hometown was full of guys who would buy enormous, expensive trucks and use them for none of the things you would expect someone with a massive, expensive truck to do. They never used it to haul around equipment of any kind. They used it to drive through the Chick-fil-A drive-through. That is the epoch of masculinity.

I'm not against buying big expensive trucks for no practical reason if you can afford it. If you could take $60K, set it on fire, and it wouldn't have any negative impact on your quality of life, you can afford to get a big flashy truck that serves no other purpose than being big and loud. But if you need to finance a car for years and years, blowing $1K or more a month on car payments, you're not making good use of your money. There's a significant difference between being generally financially stable and being rich enough to afford an impractical purchase.

The dude in this story is certainly not wealthy enough to justify the purchase of a $55K car, even though he wants one. He can't even afford to finance it on his own; he needs his wife to cosign for him. This couple has separate finances and a strange grasp on how married couples should operate financially. They are not working as a team, that's for sure.
