  • Two older patrons sit at a cafe.
  • Customers left $65 to cover a $68 bill...

So I had a table that was 2 couples. I turned the radio down for them, moved their table twice because the first one was too close to the speaker, and second one was too high (all the tables are the same height). They had special custom orders which I accommodated. They were excessively friendly, hand on my shoulder, chatty boomer types.
  • They leave and I'm bussing the table. The other waitress comes over, looking distressed, and asked if they left money on the table. Apparently when they came up to the register to pay, they handed my boss. $40. She said "oh, the bill was $68." He went to talk to the other people in his party, handed her $65, and said "this is all we have" and left.
  • She might be afraid of confrontation, but I'm not, so I headed out to the parking lot to tell them they need to pay their entire bill, but they were already driving away. Never seen boomers move so fast. Edit: Squabbling amongst ourselves in the comments about what qualifies as illegal labor practices is fun, but do you guys wanna like, unionize or something? Idk could be cool, let me know

canuckseh29 • 22h ago Your boss owes you money since they were unable to collect the right amount. If it's your mistake, sure, but this is their mistake. They should QSA $5 worth of product and move on
  • Upper Mix2922 OP. 21h ago Fortunately she took the $3 loss rather than taking it out of my tips, which has happened to me at other jobs. I'm just amazed that they thought that was an acceptable thing to do rather than scraping together $3 in pocket change to cover it. I've had kids pull this type of thing, but never 4 whole adults

  • Upper Mix2922 OP. 21h ago See, this is where I misread the situation e because honestly, that's kind of typical behavior for this restaurant. I work in a pretty affluent town with an older crowd of retirees who want all the bells and whistles but usually tip fairly well when accommodated.
  • ThatcheekyKitty • 19h ago I had a lady leaving an empty gift card two weeks ago for an $80 bill... I knew something was up by the way she was order... I don't mean to be judgmental, but I wasn't wrong..... I chased her out and she locked eyes with me from her minivan and just shrugged her shoulders and kept driving.

  • free_plax 19h ago . Had a table, a couple weeks ago, that left right after I dropped off the check. No problem, I assume they just left cash. Went to clear the table and grab the money, only to find out they simply signed the bottom of the check. I guess, in their mind, they thought I ran their credit card but nope. They were long gone by the time I realized what happened.
  • chubby_chicken_ • 21h ago was their plan with the original $40 what fkn hillbilly a bush did these people crawl out of!
  • International-Belt50 15h ago • I had someone short me 27¢ once and I went over and embarrassed him in front of his friends
  • Cyrious123 20h ago • Take the tag, call the cops! You won't get tipped but man, will they have a hassle coming for being cheap. Maybe even press charges as a future deterrent!
  • symonoxide 21h ago Call the police on them, that's dining and dashing.
  • Successful_Club3005 21h ago If they come in again, sit them at a table as close to cash register as possible someone can keep an eye on them. Next time they might try to dine & disappear without paying.
  • Pure_Fault7056 · 16h ago • They handed $40 initially and then gathered enough for $65, total.
  • BadPom 17h ago She should have comped. enough to cover the check and some tip. What a lame boss. You
  • skiesoverblackvenice 16h ago • at my restaurant, if someone walks out (either without paying or paying under), it comes out of my paycheck like they expect me, a 20yr old 5'1 woman to track down someone and demand money??? that ain't my job people drive me nuts
  • Huge-Basket244 • 12h ago There's zero reason to squabble. Look at your local laws. Those are the laws, it's not up for debate. Not by you, your boss, or redditors. If it's illegal, it's illegal. It's not up for debate. If it's not illegal in your state, that's goofy, and you state. live in a
  • It's wild as f that anyone is even talking about this. I'm in a pro employee state, I own my business. This is a business cost, not anything to do with employees.
