‘The vet said she doesn’t even look like she’s been missing for a year, and not even the thinnest gecko she’s seen in the past week!’: Student’s leopard gecko found in the basement a full floor and a half below her escape point, leading to a happy reunion

You know, most rescue stories are really simple, well at least their justification is on point, moral and makes sense. The kind of things like a cat living in a garbage bin, a dog left by the side of the road in a cardboard box, these are animals who need help and deserve a better life.

But the story we have for you today somewhat straddles the planes between needing help and needing to be left alone. For while this pet gecko did escape, it also managed to live by itself for a whole year. Catching its own food, finding its own heat source and above all else not living in a tiny cage, but enjoying a whole room to itself. So the question we put to you dear readers is whether you think that this gecko should have been left to its own devices to live in the basement (perhaps with a few tasty treats thrown in from time to time), or was its owner right to 'rescue' it?

Well, first off it is clear that this person, while they say they moved on, most certainly did not move on from losing their dear gecko and who can blame them. But on the gecko’s side of things, it sounds like the escape led to a pretty sweet set up where she had a whole basement as her tank and somewhat natural feeding ground. Clever gecko this one.

Honestly, we have to say that we are a little conflicted about this one. Like, it sounds as though the gecko was pretty happy and self-sufficient living in the basement. And like a cat who likes to go outside, you cannot really force them to be an indoor cat without harming them in one way or another. Begging the question whether putting the gecko back into captivity was the right call at all?
