Owner who finds his cat after a whole year of it being lost is concerned about her remembering him, but she surprises him when she immediately shows him love: 'Now she doesn't leave my side'

One of the worst things that we have gone through as cat owners was having our cat run away. It happened once and only once, and luckily, our kitty came back to us 24 hours later, but those 24 hours were some of the absolute worst. The concern, the fear we experienced, we haven't felt anything quite like it since. The knowledge that our spoiled little kitty would most likely not survive out there on its own for long haunted us. We cannot imagine having to go through something like that longer than 24 hours, but it does happen.

Still, cats are loyal creatures, no matter what haters might say about them. Cats remember us, they remember where they're from, and once they find their way back - whether it's 24 hours later or a year later - they will remember us. We know that, but we still understand the fear. It's a good thing that stories like these exist though- stories that remind us that no, we should not be afraid of our cats forgetting us.

    Caught my cat after she got lost a year back. I was told it's gonna take longer time for her to remember me and get used to indoors again. Here's she 3 hours after brought inside.

    She was surviving on the streets for a year! But I finally managed to trap into a cage trap. Safe to say she remembers me lol. Couldn't stop cuddling with me for almost an hour and now she doesn't leave my side only to eat and go to toilet. Welcome home Jackson

  • We understand the concern, we really do, but we also know that a cat's love for its owner should not be underestimated. People can say all they want that cats are aloof and don't get attached, but we know that's not true. And this is yet another piece of proof for that.

    zytukin A year is quite a bit of time. Are you sure it's the same cat? I remember as I child we had a cat go missing. It turned up on the other side of town some 20 miles away maybe a year later.

    Looked exactly the same, same size, same s, same markings, everything. But the personality had done a complete 180. She hadn't been too affectionate or social but the cat we got back a year later was so addicted to attention that my toddler cousin was able to pick her up by the tail and she'd still be purring.

    flourishersvk OP It's definitely her. She even remembers her spots around the apartment, her toys etc. And one look at her and I can tell it's her for sure.

    genevievex My cat got outside a few years ago and didn't come back as he usually did. 4 months later I got a call through the microchip company that he was found by a neighbor a few blocks away, he was sickly and hiding in the back of an abandoned house. They didn't want to approach him for fear they would scare him away. I got there as soon as I could,

    worried he wouldn't remember me. I went to the back of the abandoned house, crouched down at the bench he was under, and sweetly called his name. He came right out, all skin and bones, pushing his face into my hands. Needless to say he does not go outside anymore. They never forget

    Ak_Lonewolf Had my chonker get lost for a week. She went to a restaurant half mile away for snacks. Some one took a picture and I was able to recognize her. I went to her times she was seen and sure enough got her. She was so friendly people were wanting to take her home.

  • We love how when stories like these start getting traction, the people on the internet begin offering their own stories. One story - that could be a coincidence. Maybe our cats wouldn't recognize us after a year after all. But dozens of stories? That cannot be argued with.

    Bunnycat2026 Cats know their people - I once had a cat run out the door, across a park AND a highway overpass. Came back 3 weeks later like 'dinner, petting, treats?' I, however spent 3 weeks crying. Tippy could not give a toss, got what she wanted and curled up and went to sleep ** **

    daisybear8049 I have heard of plenty of cases in which it's been a year and the cat absolutely remembers! I am so glad you were reunited! What a horrible year you must have had! When my cat got out for two hours after just two weeks with us, I was a wreck and so worried about her, so I can't even imagine!
